Mathematics Major at Amherst College; Graduated May 2014 with an A- average. I took classes in numerous departments including Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Biology, and Computer Science. In my later years at college, I branched out further to Political Science, Religion, and a Spanish/European Studies class.

Experience

It has been said that you don't know what you believe until you try to write down your thoughts. I believe this statement, except for one little caveat. I think that it is also possible to draw out your beliefs in discussion with another person if you have a good conversation partner. I've recognized this through numerous conversations with friends and professors in which I arrived at my own beliefs and helped others find their beliefs. It is because of how much I enjoy this process that I want to be a tutor. I have on occasion helped my fellow students on their papers, projects, and homework. I imagine that a successful tutoring relationship with me would involve the student providing me with material on which I can provide feedback. I probably won't do well if you expect me to bring a solid lesson plan that covers the important ideas in subjects like Calculus or moral philosophy. I can talk about what I know, certainly, but I know that there is a lot that I don't know. One of my goals for any tutoring relationship I enter will be to develop a student's appreciation for thinking rigorously by showing how truly difficult and rewarding the task can be. My commitment to any student I work with is not merely to help him/her with specific material, but also to develop a love for learning and habits of mind that will facilitate learning.
